How do Claude Pro and Max usage limits work?
Two counters decide what you can still do: a 5-hour session and a weekly limit. Here is how they work, based on Anthropic’s documentation.
The 5-hour session
According to Anthropic, limits “reset on a rolling five-hour session window”. As long as you stay under the session’s ceiling you can keep working; once you reach it, you wait for the window to end.
Anthropic does not say exactly when the window starts. Settings > Usage on claude.ai shows the time left in the current session.
The weekly limit
Pro, Max and Team plans also have a weekly limit “that applies across all models”. It resets at a fixed day and time assigned to your account, which do not change with when you start using Claude.
Some models also have their own ceiling. On Max you can spend up to 50% of your weekly limit on Fable models at no extra cost; on Pro, Fable runs on usage credits from the start. Claude Code also reports Opus and Sonnet limits, which apply only to that model family.
What counts toward your limits
It is all pooled: “your usage of all different Claude product surfaces (claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Desktop) counts towards the same usage limit”. A long coding session reduces what you have left for chat, and the other way around. Usage inside a code editor counts too.
On a Team plan, limits apply to each member, not to the team as a whole.

Yes. Anthropic says so plainly: claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop count toward the same limit.

Does Max 20x give 20 times more than Pro over the week?
