Anthropic’s three options
According to Anthropic, “if you hit your usage limit, you’ll need to wait for it to reset, upgrade your plan, or purchase usage credits”.
- Wait: Claude Code states the resume time and can “continue automatically” then.
- Usage credits: you switch to pay-as-you-go at API rates, with a monthly cap you set.
- Higher plan: in Claude Code, /upgrade opens the page to switch tiers.
What does not work
Switching models: “the session and weekly limits are shared across all models, so switching models doesn’t restore access”. Only the Opus and Sonnet limits depend on the model.
The real fix: see it coming
A limit never arrives all at once: it fills up at your pace. When you can see it, you finish the task at hand, move routine work to a lighter model, or keep the big refactor for after the reset.
