Claude limits history

Limits change often: new models, limited-time offers, new names. Here is every change, dated and linked to its official source.

Claude

  1. The Fable 5 promotion ends: Fable becomes standard on Max, within 50% of the weekly limit, and runs on usage credits on Pro.

  2. With Sonnet 5, Anthropic raises limits across chat, Cowork, Claude Code and the platform.

  3. Fable 5 returns on July 1, included for up to 50% of weekly limits for a limited time.

  4. Anthropic pauses its plan to move Agent SDK and claude -p usage out of subscription limits.

  5. Access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 suspended for all customers, under a US government directive.

  6. Fable 5 is included at no extra cost on Pro, Max and Team through June 22, then through usage credits.

  7. With Opus 4.8, Claude Code limits rise to absorb higher effort levels.

  8. “Extra usage” becomes “usage credits”; /extra-usage becomes /usage-credits.

  9. Claude Code’s five-hour limits doubled on Pro, Max and Team, and the peak-hours reduction removed on Pro and Max.

  10. New Team pricing: standard seat $20 (annual) or $25 (monthly), premium seat $100 or $125 with 5 times the usage.

  11. Opus 4.5 is included in the Pro subscription.

  12. With Opus 4.5, Opus-specific caps are removed, and limits rise for Max and Team Premium.

  13. Claude Code 2.0 adds the /usage command to see plan limits.

  14. Buying usage past the limit arrives, with premium seats on Team and Enterprise.

  15. Claude Code can be used with a Pro subscription.

  16. Claude Code can be used with a Max subscription.

  17. The Team plan launches, at $30 per user per month.

  18. Claude Pro launches, at $20 a month.

Only changes that an official Anthropic page, still online, clearly dates are listed. The Max launch in April 2025 and the arrival of weekly limits in August 2025 are missing, for lack of an official page available today.

Codex (ChatGPT)

  1. Codex: limit resets can be banked on Plus and Pro.

  2. Codex temporarily included in ChatGPT Free and Go, with doubled limits on paid plans.

  3. Codex: on-demand credits beyond the plan, on Plus and Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Have Claude’s limits been cut?

Dated official pages mostly show recent increases: Claude Code’s five-hour limits doubled in May 2026, raised again with Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 5.

Since when is there a weekly limit?

It exists today on Pro, Max and Team according to Anthropic’s help center, but we found no official page still online that dates its arrival.
